High-end fashion brands transformed the Olympic opening ceremony into a spectacular visual feast, where fashion and sports intersected, igniting the perfect spirit torch.
The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics officially marked the return of the Olympic flame, illuminating the skies of the French capital even amid a downpour. Under the direction of stage director Thomas Jolly, the ceremony created an entirely new experience, allowing anyone to witness the event for free right on the Seine River and the surrounding streets, in an approach that “brings sports to the heart of the city.”
With the participation of hundreds of top artists, 300,000 live spectators, and 1.5 billion television viewers worldwide, Paris 2024 has affirmed its status as a global sports event. To further spread the spirit of sports, we cannot forget the impressive fashion moments that contributed to the event’s excitement. The LVMH Group, along with its brands Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Berluti, served as premium partners for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Under the direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri, the creative director of Dior, many famous artists appeared in stunning Haute Couture designs.
The opening act featured Lady Gaga gracefully descending the bridge with her entourage, taking the audience back to the golden age of French cinema with the legendary Zizi Jeanmaire. Her unique light pink flamingo dress, resembling delicate feathers, was paired with a satin bustier from Dior Haute Couture, evoking emotions as she performed the song “Mon Truc En Plume” by the Seine River.
Aya Nakamura electrified the atmosphere at Pont de la Concorde with her asymmetrical mini dress adorned with gold-plated feathers, reminiscent of Dior’s Haute Couture Fall-Winter designs.
Another memorable moment that left a lasting impression on the public was the performance of the French national anthem by Axelle Saint-Cirel, the talented mezzo-soprano from the island of Guadeloupe. Her pleated Dior dress, combined with the proud French flag in her hand, evoked a modern version of the traditional ancient Greek peplos garment.
Closing the event in the late night was a rendition of Édith Piaf’s classic song “Hymne à l’amour” performed by Celine Dion. The world-renowned diva appeared in a tiered white silk georgette Dior Haute Couture design, intricately embellished with crystals. This exquisite gown required over 1,000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship by artisans.
Earlier that day, Pharrell Williams, the creative director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear, joined the ranks of the Olympic torchbearers with an “opening item” from a Louis Vuitton logo trunk. Pharrell Williams also appeared in a simple black t-shirt, highlighted by a stylized LV logo in the three colors of the French flag: red, white, and blue.
Emma Chamberlain transformed into a fierce equestrian in Ralph Lauren’s iconic striped design. The “grande dame” Anna Wintour was equally striking in a blue and white striped maxi dress from Louis Vuitton, cleverly accessorized with a matching umbrella amidst the rainy weather. Another familiar face in the sports world, LeBron James, opted for a blue and red striped suit by Thom Browne. Chrissy Teigen donned a full-look Chloé ensemble with a green sweater, skirt, and cardigan, perfectly complemented by John Legend’s classic black and white vest.
